Sildenafil is used to treat problems with male sexual function (impotence or erectile dysfunction-ED). In combination with sexual stimulation, sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis and helping a man achieve and maintain an erection. To treat erectile dysfunction (ED), take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually as needed. Take sildenafil at least 30 minutes, but no more than 4 hours before sexual activity (most effective is 1 hour before). Do not take it more than once a day.

A meal that is high in fat may slow down how quickly the medicine starts to work.

The dose depends on your condition, your response to treatment, and what other medicines you are taking. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medicines).
